Almost parents have many concerns of their unborn baby’s appearance. “Which color will my lovely unborn baby’s eyes be?”, for example. The answer is far from easy as it normally lies in a complex recipe of hereditary factors and genes. And until now, sometimes, the geneticists feel hard to study the reason.
Melanin – a pigment in the iris of the eye – is the main factor in defining a person eye’s color. With a large number of melanin, people will inherit brown eye; meanwhile, the people with blue eyes has a small amount of melanin. In addition, people with other colors commonly fall into somewhere in the middle of the two extremes.
How to know the baby’s eye color? Generally, the baby will inherit his/her parents’ genes. These connected genes will define the consequent eye color of the baby. Why we say “consequent“? Normally, all of the babies have blue eyes instead of brown, black or gray colors. It means that these babies have a little melanin when giving a birth. After that, their body will produce melanin automatically (sometimes it might take for a few of years). Accordingly, in the early months, the baby eye’s color is blue and then change into the brown one when they grow up.
The basic rules of genetics affirm that eye color is derived as follows:
- Both parents have brown eyes, so ¼ their children will be born with blue eyes and ¾ having brown eyes.
- If both parents have blue eyes, it’s definitive that their children will inherit the blue eyes.
- The brown eye is controlling; meanwhile, the blue eye is passive.
People often have a common misunderstanding; that is, the brown-eyed parents will have the babies with the same color. It’s not actually accurate, right? Surely, the positive combinations of eye color in the parents will enhance or dismiss the chances of a specific eye color being generated in the baby. Similarly, if both parents have blue eyes or green eyes, it doesn’t mean that their children will have the same eye color. It’s because each of father and mother will bring the different genes. So, to get more clear information, try to look at this board below.
|Parent 1||Parent 2||Baby’s eye color|

|Blue||Blue||99% Blue – 1% Green – 0% Brown|
|Blue||Green||50% Blue – 50% Green – 0% Brown|
|Green||Green||25% Blue – 75% Green – 0% Brown|
