You’re pregnant. You and your husband are burning to welcome your first-born. Have you ever wondered which eye color your baby is? He/she has the same color with you or your husband. Normally, all of the babies are born with blue eyes, notwithstanding their parents’ eye color. The main reason is the babies have not yet begun creating the color “melanin” which is a dark brown color in their eyes’ irises. And until the age of three, the child’s eye color can be determined.

What defines the baby eye color?

Eye color is a physical feature that is defined by the combination of genes from both parents. There are 3 main eye color genes such as brown, blue and green. The scientist might explain the inheritance of the 3 above eye colors, but they don’t give a firm reason why a couple of babies have hazel, grey or other colors.

As you know, genes are the elementary unit of heredity, and they are used to define lots of traits about the baby. Meanwhile alleles are discovered in genes in order to define the presence of any traits. There are normally 2 alleles for each trait. Let’s talk about the eye color! The green allele is superior to the blue one; while the brown allele is superior to the green and blue one. Accordingly, brown eyes prevail in a huge part of the world because over a half of people here have them.

My mother has dark brown eyes and my father has light blue. My eyes are green, yet these statistics say there is a zero percent possibility of that occurrence. I was, however, born with blue eyes, but they turned green around age three and have stayed that way ever since. Are these results according to the eye-color-potential of a newborn only?
